Every Friday, at The Soundx we will pick some new releases, based on quality or importance, which ones you should listen to throughout the week. This week we have releases from Olivia Rodrigo, Twenty One Pilots, CHAI, Mdou Moctar, and Mdou Moctar .
Olivia Rodrigo – SOUR
Released through Geffen Records, SOUR is Disney Channel’s pop star Olivia Rodrigo’s debut album. According to her, the album explores her dangers and discoveries as a 17-year-old teenager, with its title referring to the uncomfortable and “sour” emotions that young people experience. The record also features the singles “Drivers License,” “Deja Vu,” and “Good 4 U.”
Twenty One Pilots – Scaled And Icy
Twenty One Pilots’ Scaled and Icy is the rock-pop duo’s sixth studio album. Arriving through Fueled by Ramen e Elektra Records, the record began to be produced in 2019, shortly after the release of their last album, Trench. According to Tyler Joseph, “There’s a character that hasn’t been talked about on any record yet that plays a huge role in the narrative that obviously will need to be talked about and it’s probably where we’re going next.” The album features the single “Shy Away.”
CHAI – WINK
WINK is the CHAI’s third record and first with Sub Pop records. The album features songs that incorporate different styles and creative approaches in an authorial and humorous way. The album features 12 new songs by Mana, Kana, Yuk, and Yuna.
Mdou Moctar – Afrique Victime
Afrique Victime is the fifth studio album by Mahamadou Souleymane under the stage name of Mdou Moctar. Featuring sound experimentation, distortions, and delusions yet political speeches, the record arrives through Matador Records.
Gruff Rhys – Seeking New Gods
Seeking New Gods, Gruff Rhys’s fifth record was inspired by Mount Paektu, recorded in the Mojave desert, and produced by Beastie Boys producer Mario Caldato. The record features the songs, “Mausoleum Of My Former Self” and “Can’t Carry On,” and is released through Rough Trade Records.
